Maharashtra Cuisines

Mumbai has the best selection of restaurants of any Indian city. You could probably trace the history of the metropolis by trawling through the amazing variety of food available: Parsi dhansak, Gujarati thalis, Muslim kebabs, Mangalorean seafood and, of course, Mumbai's famous speciality bhelpuri -a tasty snack of crisp noodles, puffed rice, spiced vegetables, crushed puri, chutney and chillies. The city's delicious seafood is safe to eat-even during the monsoon months.

Restaurants at Colava :

Leopold Cafe & Bar: On Colaba Causeway Leopold Cafe & Bar is a Mumbai institution. It has an extensive Continental, Chinese and veg/non-veg menu, and the quality of food is pretty good.

Piccadilly Restaurant: On Colaba Causeway, a few blocks south of Leopold, is the place to go for cheap western breakfast .

Cafe De La Plaza: On the 2nd floor of the Metro Plaza complex on Colaba Causeway, is a tiny outdoor terrace cafe serving juices, burgers and sandwiches.

Tanjore: At Taj Mahal Hotel, is a sumptuous restaurant with a select menu of tandoori dishes and thalis. It has Indian music and dance on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Restaurants at Fort :

Mocambo Cafe & Bar : It is a fine spot in the heart of the fort serving a mixture of Indian and Continental fare. The beer is cold, the sandwiches are good and the open street frontage lets you absorb the fort's atmosphere.

Fountain Inn : In Nanabhai Lane, is one of several gallery-style moderately priced restaurant-bars in the fort. It's a welcoming place with a vast menu ranging from tandoori crab to simple potato chaat.

Apoorva : It is an excellent Mangalorean seafood specialist whose mouthwatering crabs and prawn gasses are known throughout South Mumbai.

Suvidha : In the National Insurance Building at 204 Dr D Naoroji Rd, has excellent South Indian vegetarian and Punjabi food .

Restaurants at Churchgate & Nariman Point :

Cafe Ideal : It is an amiable Irani-style cafe on Chowpatty Seaface with CD jukebox and the usual Continental, Chinese, Indian hybrid menu.

Cafe Naaz : On the edge of Malabar Hill's Kamala Nehru Park, is a multi-tiered terrace cafe with superb views of Back Bay and Chowpatty Beach. It's a great place to loiter around sunset as the lights of Marine Drive come on.

China Garden : In Om Chamber, Kemps Corner is an elegant Chines restaurant and cocktail bar.
