above this village the mighty Godavari emerges. It dribbles into the Gangasagar bathing tank
and devotees believe that the sacred waters washes away all the sins. Legend has it that Gautam
Rishi prayed to Lord Shiva on the Brahmagiri hill which rises above the temple. Lord Shiva,
pleased with his devotion allowed Gautam Rishi to bring the Godavari waters from heaven to earth.
Incidentally Trimbak also has the Trimbakeshwar Temple, one of India's most sacred shrine. It
contains the main 'Jyotirlinga' among the 12 Jyotirlingas spread across the country.
Hindu mythology says that at this magi- cal spot one of the four drops of nectar fell to earth
from the'arnrit kumbh' during the struggle between the gods and the de- mons. This is the
origin of the sacred , Kumbh Mela' at Nashik and the other sites -Haridwar, Ujjain and Prayag.
The annual festival of 'Shivrathri' is cel- ebrated with great pomp and gaity (Feb- March)
